January's Featured Women-Owned Business: FerrisBuilt

Updated: Jan 12

Well, 2020 is finally behind us, and I think we can all say we’re more than relieved. I am speaking it out into the universe that 2021 will be better than 2020! With that being said, one of my goals for this year (because I don’t believe in resolutions) is to feature more women-owned businesses on my social media and blog. I am so excited to feature Lindsey from FerrisBuilt as my first featured women-owned business!

Lindsey is a mom of two twin girls in Seattle who creates art from the inspiration around her. She features clothing items and woodwork that stand for something. Lindsey has female empowerment shirts, mental health tees, and so much more. When I stumbled upon her account, I had to reach out to learn more about her and her business. I mean, her RBG tee was seen on Meghan Markle!! Keep scrolling to learn more about FerrisBuilt.

Q: What made you start FerrisBuilt?

A: I have been tinkering with creative projects for years and have had an Etsy store to sell everything from candles to wood art to t-shirts as a fun hobby. This past March I had to close my business of 12 years (event production) due to the Coronavirus pandemic and had always thought about trying to make a go of my creative side for my job. With my industry shut down I decided it was time to put all my efforts into designing and creating and see where it will take me. By October, FerrisBuilt became my full-time job and I love it!

Q: Who is your biggest role model?

A: My kids are my biggest role model, I know that’s kind of a backward answer - but by role model, I mean that I am driven to be a better mom, woman, and person to lead by example for them. Teaching them all the wiggly bits of life that aren’t taught in schools such as navigating emotions, responsibility, and life. I find myself motivated by how to be the best I can be for them. In turn, I learn from them by their curiosity and openness to continue to challenge myself.

Q: How has the pandemic affected your business?

A: FerrisBuilt wouldn’t be what it is today if it wasn’t for the pandemic. Had I not had to close the doors of my prior business, I would not have put my efforts into FerrisBuilt. In spite of the challenges of this pandemic, I am grateful that it pushed me in the direction of being creative for a living and something that in the back of my head I had always wanted to do. I guess you could say that FerrisBuilt is one of my personal silver linings from the pandemic.

Q: What are your biggest goals for the New Year?

A: Hopefully hug my extended family and friends when we can get past the pandemic or have vaccines widely available. For FerrisBuilt it will be to continue to grow and see where my customers take me with regards to what products resonate with them. I will also be adding more gift items such as mugs, pillows, buttons, stickers etc.

Q: What motivates you?

A: I am motivated by a challenge and I am an experiential learner, so I love to dive in headfirst and learn and change directions on the way. With FerrisBuilt, I’ve never run an e-commerce business so I dove in with Etsy first, learning along the way, making changes and improvements then moved into my own standalone store and I’m learning daily with that. I get excited by the experience of learning something new and challenging.

A huge thank you to Lindsey for taking the time to talk with me, and I feel so grateful to be able to support a women-owned business especially during the pandemic. Click here to learn more about FerrisBuilt or to get your hands on some super cute new items to add to your closet.
