Imperfect Produce Review + Grocery Store Comparison

Updated: Dec 21, 2020

I know I’m not the only one that ever feels guilty about buying something I thought I wanted at the store only for it to whither away in the fridge a week later and end up in the garbage can. Let’s admit it, we’re all guilty of something like this. But the best part is, there's something we can do about these situations.

Over 80 billion pounds of food get thrown away each year in the United States alone. Yes, you read that right, 80 BILLION POUNDS! When I read this statistic, my mouth literally dropped open. That’s about 219 pounds of food waste per person each year or $1,600 of food per family. Crazy right? After reading about food waste in the U.S., I knew there had to be something better for me, my wallet, and the planet out there. This is when I discovered Imperfect Produce.

Imperfect Produce is a truly remarkable company. They are striving to eliminate food waste by taking foods that are deemed too ‘imperfect’ or ‘ugly’ to sell in traditional grocery stores and offering them to consumers like me. If they didn’t do this, the food, even if the product is perfectly fine, would go straight to the garbage. Looking different isn’t the only reason foods get sent to Imperfect, they can also be discontinued products (not expired), part of a surplus, end or broken pieces, or short-coded. I couldn’t believe all of the requirements that went into our food just to be sold at the grocery store. Here’s a complete breakdown of the pros, cons, and price comparisons of Imperfect Produce.

Things I love:

  • Produce comes naked (no extra plastic packaging here!) unless they specifically state in the description

  • I get to pick what I want or don’t want each week just like I used to do with Instacart

  • Food is shipped with an ice pack and cooler bag. If you don’t have use for either of these, they can pick them back up on the next delivery

  • Food is delivered straight to your door (and it’s contactless!)

  • Customer service is impressive. Whenever I’m missing an item or something comes damaged, they always reimburse me no questions asked.

Things I don’t love:

  • The orders sometimes get mixed up. One time I order 4 cans of cold brew and instead received 4 loaves of bread.

  • Some things are out of stock if you don’t pick your groceries right away

  • Do not order anything that is super fragile like eggs, because they will more than likely break. The food is not packed with any extra plastic or bubble wrap to add protection to fragile items.

With that being said, is Imperfect worth it? 100% YES. Not only does it strive to eliminate food waste but it also gives those that are considered ‘high risk’ during the *current situation* another option for grocery shopping.

So let’s get to the price comparison with other stores. I will be comparing my last Imperfect Produce order as if I shopped for the same (or something similar) to Sprouts and Fry’s (Kroger). Anything marked with (*) and is bolded is an item that is similar to what I purchased from Imperfect if they didn't have the exact same brand of the item. I used both of the store's online catalog to search for prices. Alright, let's go!

Final Thoughts:

I have fallen in love with Imperfect Produce, and I love how convenient the service is especially during a pandemic. Imperfect is definitely worth trying out if you have been thinking about it. It’s definitely a cheaper alternative to Instacart where you have to pay a delivery fee and leave a tip for your driver. Another positive is that Imperfect Produce is always delivered on time, which was not the case when we used Instacart.

Let me know, are you going to try out Imperfect Produce or sticking to traditional grocery shopping?

If you want to try out Imperfect Produce yourself, I do have a discount link with them: http://imprfct.us/v/cheyenne_703

By using this link you will receive $10 off your order, and I will receive a $10 credit towards my next order too.
