Parabens. Triclosan. Phthalates. Propylene glycol. Aluminum. Diethanolamine.
Now if you can only pronounce one of these, don’t worry, you’re not alone! I can only pronounce aluminum. So what do all of these words have in common? They’re all found in your typical deodorant sticks or sprays found on the shelves. Oh, and they all are linked to potentially causing cancer, Alzheimer’s, infertility problems, and more. I know, this can be overwhelming and scary to find out that a lot of these chemicals are found in our everyday products. But with the ever-changing retail market, we now have alternatives to choose from that are safer, more sustainable, and can help us save money. Here are four reasons why I switched to natural deodorant, and what you need to look for next time you need to stock up so you don’t have B.O.
Did you know that popular deodorant brands like Dove and Old Spice contain palm oil and palm kernel oil? If you’re not familiar with this ingredient, it’s known for the mass deforestation as well as being linked to violating the human rights of the workers. Even if the packaging states, “ethically sourced palm oil”, that doesn’t mean that they aren’t causing deforestation. (I’m looking at you Tom’s of Maine). The best option is to look for alternatives that contain coconut oil which is an ingredient that has a very low environmental impact.
2. Cruelty-Free & Vegan
This is one of the saddest things I have found out on my eco-living journey. Things that I didn’t even think would be tested on animals, well they are. This includes things like you guessed it, deodorant from the store’s most common brands. These include Degree, Old Spice, Sauve, Dove, Axe, and a ton more. I will never understand why animal testing is still a thing, but converting all of my beauty products to cruelty-free and vegan is a goal of mine in 2020. It’s a safe bet that if the product is organic and vegan, that product will more than likely be cruelty-free. But to be on the safe side, always, always look for an indication like the leaping bunny certified logo on the product.
When you’re first comparing prices of natural deodorant brands versus the traditional ones, the prices are one of the biggest differences. The natural ones are always more expensive than the others, so you might be thinking, “How is the natural one more cost-effective than the one that’s only $2.99?”. Well, as the old saying goes, you get exactly what you pay for. You don’t have to use as much of the natural product, because your armpits won’t become reliant on ingredients like aluminum and artificial fragrance to keep you smelling nice. Natural deodorant is not an antiperspirant which means it will not clog the pores on your pits. This allows your armpits to breathe but also helps you not to smell from natural fragrances like essential oils as well as reducing the number of bacteria in your pits. When you don’t have to be constantly putting deodorant on, you won’t be using as much, hence cost-effective. You can also make your own for super cheap, check out this easy DIY recipe.
This is the biggest reason I switched to a deodorant. I knew if I couldn’t pronounce the very long list of ingredients in my favorite deodorant, it probably wasn’t good for me. This was the deciding factor to find a deodorant that won’t clog my pores or cause me any harm in the long run. Studies have shown that parabens, even at low-doses over time, could cause cancer. When you use products that have less harmful ingredients and more natural ingredients, your health will thank you.
So now that you know the potential harms of traditional deodorant, it’s time to make the switch to natural deodorant. But there are so many on the market that you can be overwhelmed by all of the choices (I know I was). Also, what works for me might now work for you, but here are some of my favorites.
D.O. Crystal Deodorant Stick
I know, I know. How does a crystal stick work? I was skeptical too (and so was Nolan).
Full disclosure, I was sent products from D.O. to try out in exchange for my opinion. I will always share my honest thoughts whether they are positive or negative.
The truth is… IT WORKS. We were both astonished that this stick that is made up of one ingredient works better than his Old Spice or my lush deodorants. All you have to do is wet the crystal and apply it directly to your armpits. I let it dry before putting on my shirt but that’s literally it. We put this product through some extensive tests to see how it would perform against our favorites. We went hiking and Nolan played a full 9-inning game in 100+ degree weather...and yes I had to smell his pits. BUT THERE WAS NO SMELL. LIKE AT ALL. Yes, we did sweat but that’s because this product doesn’t clog the pores in your pits like an antiperspirant would. I’m sold, 100% sold. The best part is we’ve been using the stick for almost a month now and haven’t even made a dent in it.
D.O. Crystal Deodorant Powder
This didn’t work well for my underarms, but I decided to try the powder on my thighs. I’m not ashamed that I don’t have a thigh gap, but sometimes my thighs can chaff from Arizona’s weather. If I’m wearing jean shorts, I make sure to put this on the inside of my thighs to help with them rubbing together.
If you’re looking for a natural deodorant that has a smell, this one is for you. I have tried so many different natural deodorants and the majority of them were way too harsh for my pits. Especially if they had a fragrance added to it. I love Native’s cucumber & mint*scent that is made for sensitive skin. I have never had a reaction or broke out in a rash from this one. I bought mine at Target*.
